Santander is the largest bank in the Eurozone and one of the biggest in the world. Banco Santander was founded in 1857. However, the banking group of the same name was created in Santander, Spain, in 1999, after the merger between Banco Santander and Banco Central Hispano. At its inception, the bank only operated in the province of Santander (that now is named Cantabria). Soon it bought a lot of banks and expanded to every place in Spain. Nowadays, Banco Santander is present across the world, specially in Europe and Latin America.
In 2012, Banco Santander was chosen as the Best Bank in the World by Euromoney’s annual classification. In the last years, the banking group has became a leading global bank. It has more than 100 million clients in a network of 14.400 branches. Besides, it has around 187.000 employees and more than 3,3 million stockholders.
Santander’s president is Emilio Botín, who is present in the group since 1958. The bank’s headquarter is still located in Santander, Spain.
